I don't think this is true.  I don't think there is a death penalty for homosexuality in the Quran.  Of course a lot of Islamic countries are completely insane and have little to do with the Quran or historical Islam, but at least my mosque seems pretty reasonable.  I think you just ask about this in your local mosque.
